READING
We read informational text last week, making connections between various sources on the same topic (lions.) We discussed how text features, such as headings, captions, and photographs help us understand the text. This week we will return to reading literary text, focusing on characters’ motivations, personal growth, and development. We will also make conclusions about the narrator based on his or her thoughts and/or observations.
LANGUAGE
We will review irregular plural nouns and the different kinds of sentences (declarative, exclamatory, command, question.)
Students will type their creative story. If you have an extra thumb-drive, please send it in with your child so they can save their writing projects and work on them at home. Please mark the thumb-drive with your child’s name.
SOCIAL STUDIES
We will finish our study of Maryland geography by exploring the answer to the question, “How do the geographic characteristics of Maryland’s regions affect the climate, economy, and population?”
SCIENCE
We will begin a new unit on Changing Landforms. Students will explore how physical weathering (water, ice, and wind) and erosion cause changes to the Earth’s surface.
MATH
We will begin our next unit on Adding and Subtracting Greater Numbers (with regrouping.) Please see my letter in your child’s Homework Folder to learn the specific skills, strategies, and vocabulary we will be working on.
Our next unit will be on Multiplication, so please continue to work with your child on memorizing the multiplication/division fact families. They should use the triangular flash cards we made in class. I have delayed this unit to give students time to memorize their fact families; I hope they’re taking advantage of this chance to strengthen their skills! It will make this unit so much easier for them as we explore factors and multiples of numbers.
